From clogs to guitar strings

“We don’t understand the words, but we can feel them…” This is how the majority of the inhabitants of the land of tulips and clogs describe fado. This sentiment is mainly down to two factors: on the one hand, Holland is a country which is open to other languages and cultures; on the other, fado, the musical code of the Portuguese, talks of profound feelings that makes guitars weep. Daisy Correia, who was born in Amsterdam, was unaware of fado until she heard Dulce Pontes, at the age of 16, when her mother, a Portuguese immigrant, gave her an album by the singer. The word “fado” comes from the Latin fatum, which means, “destiny”, and Daisy cannot escape hers. Her fate was sealed. She began her musical career in the company of the Portuguese singer Fernando Lameirinhas, who advised her to follow her heart, later inviting her to accompany him on his concert tours. After the first steps, Daisy felt that the audience not only inspired her but also taught her things: she needed to show the fado that she had inside of her, to share it, and this is how the dream of making a record came to fruition.
In 2009, at the age of 22, Daisy released the album Este Meu Fado. And what’s so special about her fado? The influence of various styles, which is unsurprising considering that the singer herself has a diverse background (half Portuguese, half Dutch), is a citizen of the world and lives in Amsterdam, which means heartfelt fado, cheerful pop and African beats. This year, Daisy hopes to make another dream come true and do her first tour, which starts in September in Holland. But there are other things on her wish list, like seeing her fado spread to Portugal and the other side of the Atlantic. From an early age she has visited Portugal on holiday and when she’s in the country, she feels Portuguese. However, she confesses that her height, fair hair and her Portuguese give her away slightly. But this is nothing that Daisy can’t overcome with her contagious smile and energy. At the moment, she’s living in Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, a region full of canals and somewhat marshy. I terms of the town, she recommends visiting the fields of flowers and tulips around Kaasmarkt and a traditional cheese market, where the sellers are dressed in traditional costume. Although Holland is her life, Portugal symbolises family, sun and good food. But it’s when Holland plays Portugal that she suffers most… which she manages to resolve by supporting both in different ways!
